Quick question: Are you wearing ENOUGH sunscreen?

Protecting Your Skin in the August Heat

Tips for wearing sunscreen in the Florida heat. Palm tree in the Florida Sun can provide shade, but proper SPF usage is key.

Florida is HOT hot right now.

And since we're all trying not to melt between the house and the car, this feels like a good time for a little SPF check-in. You already know I'm going to tell you to wear sunscreen.

But here's the part we don't talk about enough: Are you actually wearing enough of it? Because that little pea-sized dot you're stretching across your entire face, neck and chest?

Friend. We need to talk.

When wearing sunscreen, how much SPF do you actually need?

For your face, aim for about two finger lengths of sunscreen. That's sunscreen applied in a line down your index and middle fingers.

And don't stop at your face! Your ears, neck and chest need protection too if they're exposed.

For your body, think approximately a shot-glass-sized amount to cover exposed skin.

Yes, it's probably more sunscreen than you're currently using.

“But I'm not going to the beach…”

You don't have to be.

Driving to work. Walking through a parking lot. Sitting outside for lunch. Running errands. Watching your kid's game.

Sun exposure isn't reserved for beach days. And yes, cloudy days count too.

And then there's reapplication…

If you're spending time outdoors, wearing sunscreen isn't a one-and-done situation. Reapply about every 2 hours, and sooner after swimming, heavy sweating or towel drying.

And here in Florida, let's be serious about the “sweating” part. You can walk from Target to your car and reconsider every decision you've ever made.

What should you look for?

Keep it simple:

Broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher.

And most importantly, find one you actually like wearing. The “best” sunscreen isn't doing much for you sitting untouched in your bathroom cabinet. I would much rather you have an SPF you enjoy enough to apply generously and consistently.

Don't have one you love yet?

I have several sunscreens I recommend, and they're not all the same. Your skin type, skin concerns, and how you like your SPF to feel can all make a difference.

Keep Your Results

Those with darker skin tones need to still take wearing sunscreen seriously by applying the correct amount

One more thing, especially for my clients working on dark spots and uneven tone...

We can use great products. We can do corrective treatments. We can work on that pigmentation together. But if you're not protecting your skin from UV exposure every day, you're making our job a whole lot harder.

Don't let the August sun undo your skincare journey. Protecting your skin now ensures your future treatments are more effective.

Protect the progress we're making. Wear the SPF. And please…wear enough of it.

Expert Tip: Use the 'Two-Finger Rule' for measuring facial SPF.
